Descend into history…

As you descend, you search below for a glimpse of a mysterious shadow. As you near the bottom, you suddenly blink and the shipwreck materializes below you. Whether this is your first or fiftieth dive on a shipwreck, few moments compare with descending of a wreck.

While most people think of a “ship” when they think of a wreck, wreck diving includes other crafts, such as sailboats, aircraft’s, automobiles, etc. All are considered artificial reefs whether they were placed underwater for diver exploration or accidental.

Underwater Dive Center’s Wreck Diver specialty course is designed to familiarize divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, problems, hazards and excitement of diving on wrecks. This course is intended to develop your practical knowledge of the underwater wreck environment, make you aware of the historical value of wrecks and of the legal issues surrounding shipwrecks and help you plan and organize dives to safely explore wrecks locally as well as in the tropics.

What You Learn…

  • Wreck diving equipment considerations including using reels to guide exploration
  • Techniques to avoid kicking up silt or disturbing shipwrecks or artificial reefs
  • Surveying and mapping a shipwreck or artificial reef
  • Safety considerations for navigating and exploring wrecks

What You Need…

You use all the basic scuba gear plus a dive computer, 2 dive lights, dive knife and back-up cutting tool, dive slate, audible and visual signaling device and wreck diving reel.

The Learning Materials You Need…

PADI Wreck Diver Book (included in the course fee).

In addition to previewing skills you will practice with your instructor, the materials serve as a reference guide for wreck diving in a variety of conditions and environments.You’ll also find the answers to common questions such as :

  • What are the laws pertaining to shipwrecks?
  • What are the hazards of entering a wreck?

Prerequisites…

  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or have a qualifying certification from another organization)
  • Minimum of 20 logged dives documenting experience in night diving, deep diving, underwater navigation, and search and recovery
  • Be 15 years or older
